The person that has influenced me/that I respect most would have to be my mother. At 23, my mom broke her neck diving in to lake Michigan and is now a paraplegic (meaning she is permanently paralyzed from the waist down). At the time, she was in school in Chicago studying to be a nurse, but the changes in her life and the obstacles around her moved her interests away from nursing and towards disability civil rights. Today, she is the president and CEO of an non-for-profit disability organization in Chicago called Access Living and has taken part in many of the efforts towards making Chicago a more universally accessible city.
Through her work, my mother has shown me that when inspired and motivated, one can do whatever it is they hope to do. She has also shown me that even the most devastating things(like her accident) can open doors in ones life that would have never been opened otherwise.
